Healing with Acupuncture In the West – We often associate acupuncture with pain relief, however, having been developed and refined for over 2000 years, acupuncture also offers a safe, effective complementary treatment for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions. Despite being founded on a different concept of the body from that understood in the West, acupuncture is wholly compatible with conventional medicine and medications.

These are some of the conditions which commonly respond to acupuncture: ALLERGY / HAYFEVER – ANXIETY / STRESS – ARTHRITIS / RHEUMATISM – BACK PAIN / SCIATICA – BRONCHITIS – CHRONIC FATIGUE – CIRCULATORY DISORDERS – COMMON COLD/INFLUENZA – CONSTIPATION/DIARRHOEA – DEPRESSION / LETHARGY – DIGESTIVE DIFFICULTIES – FATIGUE – FERTILITY – HEADACHE/ MIGRAINE – HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE – INFERTILITY/ IMPOTENCE – IRRITABLE BOWEL – MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS – MORNING SICKNESS -MUSCULOSKELETAL PROBLEMS – MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS – PMT – PAIN RELIEF – SHINGLES – SINUSITIS -SPORTS INJURIES – STROKE RECOVERY

Acupuncture is also helpful after illness, or in post-operative convalescence, where it can hasten and support a return to former levels of energy and wellbeing. It is a great pick-me-up and can be an especially appropriate treatment when people feel unwell in themselves without necessarily being ‘ill’ in the Western sense.

What to expect when you come for an acupuncture treatment.

Diagnosis: A detailed case paper is taken which includes the main reason for your visit (including current medications), but also any other symptoms, your medical history, family history and present lifestyle circumstances. Body and tongue diagnoses are made in order to understand the possible mechanisms of your complaint/s. These are non-invasive procedures, but may involve you dressing down to your underwear (a gown is available). Your pulses are monitored to ascertain the internal workings of your system: The 12 pulses taken correspond to your organs and thence meridian system, an understanding of which forms the core of Chinese Medicinal theory. Acupuncture points are functional aspects along these meridians.

Treatment: This involves making gentle adjustments using acupuncture points. A minimal number of very fine needles are carefully inserted and retained for about 20 minutes. Treatment is relatively painless. Your body (and mind) is energised and directed specifically how to move towards healing. The number of treatments required is assessed individually and discussed on an ongoing basis. There is no obligation to take a long course of treatment, but most people find that one treatment a week for 2 to 3 weeks is required to get things moving. The effects of acupuncture can sometimes be dramatic, with even long-standing symptoms improving after a few sessions. As the body adjusts and symptoms improve, treatments can be spaced at longer intervals to suit. Many people also like to return for a monthly or seasonal ‘tune-up’ to remind their system how to perform at its best. Traditionally, acupuncture was used preventatively as a means to support and maintain a healthy constitution.

Afterwards: We usually recommend that you take it a bit easy after acupuncture; this allows your body to respond fully. Treatments are relaxing and act like a tonic. Afterwards, many people describe a greater sense of wellbeing, better digestion, increased energy and sounder sleep.
